Why Thanksgiving Hosting Is Influencing Home Buyers
A new Realtor.com® survey finds that 52% of U.S. adults said hosting Thanksgiving dinner played at least some role in their most recent home search.
Who’s Leading This Trend
- Gen Z and Millennials (60% each) are far more likely than Gen X (47%) or Baby Boomers (30%) to say entertaining for the holidays influenced their home-buying decisions.
- For younger buyers, “home for the holidays” means space: a place big enough to gather family and friends — not just a roof over their heads.
What Features Matter Most
When asked what makes a home more “hostable,” respondents prioritized:
- Big Kitchen — 92% said it makes them more willing to host.
- Large Family Room — also 92%.
- Large Dining Room — 86%.
- Guest Bathroom — 87%.
- Outdoor Space (76%) and Guest Bedroom (73%) were also highly valued.
- Double Oven was much less of a priority — only 61% said it was important.
Interestingly, when people think about adding extra rooms, opinions split fairly evenly: 44% prefer an extra bedroom, while 45% prefer another bathroom.
- Among Gen Z specifically, 48% favor an extra bathroom, while 39% go for a bedroom.
